Alternatives to the Oculus Go

Facebook/Oculus has already announced that it will no longer continue with production (and support from 2021) of the Oculus Go. This comes as a surprise to many VR users, as the Oculus Go is one of the more popular VR glasses at the moment.

The Oculus Go is characterized by its light weight, high ease of use and relatively low purchase price (compared to with other VR glasses). These properties make the Oculus Go the ideal VR glasses for novice VR enthusiasts, but also for special target groups, such as children in the hospital. The advantage of the Oculus Go is that the glasses work completely wirelessly and without Computer anywhere. For this reason, the Headset is ideal to set up with someone, for example to show a nice 360 degree video. But now that the Oculus Go is out of production - and support from Oculus is being put on the back burner, it might be wise to look for alternatives.

Fortunately, there are a number of headsets that can be used for the same purposes as the Oculus Go! In this blog we highlight a number of good alternative VR glasses for you.

1. Oculus Quest

One of the reasons Facebook is stopping with production and support for the Oculus Go is that the company wants to focus on the future of the Oculus Quest. These VR glasses have a powerful built-in processor and are therefore more suitable for playing games. The Oculus Quest can also be used completely wirelessly, but can be connected via Oculus Link with to a Computer if desired. By doing this you can use VR content that is normally only suitable for PC-VR. This makes the Oculus Quest a unique all-in-1 Headset that provides good glasses for both entertainment and business applications.

One of the drawbacks of Oculus Quest is the fact that the glasses are only suitable for Consumers. Oculus states that business VR users must have a commercial license (Oculus for Business). with this license allows the Oculus Quest to be used in a business and commercial environment, but the downside of this is that - in addition to this license, you also directly purchase business software from Oculus for at least 1 year. However, this software offers a number of major advantages over the consumer version, because with the corporate software you can control the Oculus Quest from the outside (such as updating, install apps, launch apps, etc.). For business and/or commercial users who do not have Oculus for Business - after (software) checking by Oculus itself, sanctions such as a ban of the account or a block of the Headset may follow.

  • 4 Built-in cameras for a good and reliable form of tracking.
  • Powerful built-in processor for playing VR games.
  • There are many accessories, such as travel cases and Controller covers available for the Oculus Quest.
  • Oculus Quest may not be used by default within companies and/or for commercial purposes.
  • The refresh rate is with 72Hz lower than the Oculus Rift's 90Hz.

2. Pico G2 4K / Neo 2

The Pico G2 is seen as the most obvious successor to the Oculus Quest. Pico - originally an Asian company, now does business all over the world. The Pico G2 is the closest with to the Oculus Go. The same light weight, ergonomic design and ease of use characterize this Headset. However, Pico has even added some other useful features that make the Headset even more comfortable. For example, the battery of these Headset is built into the band that runs over the back of the head, which creates less pressure at the front of the VR glasses (something you notice very well with the Oculus Quest) . This makes the Pico G2 4K just a bit more comfortable and you can comfortably keep the glasses on for a longer period of time.

Pico's glasses have two major advantages over Oculus: 1. the image resolution of the glasses is higher, so that high-quality videos can be displayed a lot better, and 2. Pico runs on an open platform and the manufacturer of this product encourages using Pico in a commercial environment. This offers with many opportunities, especially for the entertainment industry, because the Pico G2 4K and the Pico Neo 2 are (from a software point of view) certainly future-proof.

The Pico G2 4K is a 3 DoF pair of glasses and therefore comes closest to the Oculus Go. The Pico Neo 2 is a 6 DoF with two Controllers, thus sharing more similarities with with Oculus Quest.

  • Pico focuses with particularly on companies and welcomes the use of its own content.
  • Ergonomic design and better weight distribution make the Headset comfortable for a longer period of time.
  • Very high image resolution of 4K (combined) for beautiful display of content.
  • Pico G2 4K is less suitable for (free-roam) gaming due to 3 DoF.
  • Higher standard purchase price than the price of Oculus Go.

3. HTC Vive Focus Plus

HTC Vive Focus Plus is a 6 DoF glasses with powerful built-in processor. The Vive Focus Plus is intended for business users who want to use the Headset for enterprise applications. with a high image resolution and 6 DoF movement, the Headset lends itself extremely well to developers and companies who want to put their own content on the glasses. For example, the HTC Vive Focus Plus is often used by architect companies that have designed their own house in VR. with with the Vive Focus Plus you can easily walk through the virtual space without cables and without obstacles. Developers can also with handle the Vive Focus Plus well, because with the VIVE Wave platform makes it relatively easy to develop and share proprietary content by and with third-party developers.

The Vive Focus Plus can be used software-wise without any restrictions in a business environment, but it must have the HTC Enterprise Service for the warranty. with this service links the serial number of the Headset and Controllers to a business account with HTC. If you then want to claim the warranty (or other support), you can directly contact with HTC and they will solve the problem in an accelerated process.

  • 6 Degrees of freedom tracking of the Headset and the Controllers.
  • Powerful built-in processor for high-quality video playback.
  • The VIVE Wave platform offers developers many opportunities to develop their own VR content.
  • High purchase price compared to with other Standalone VR glasses.

4. VROrbit Theater

VROrbit Theater is a somewhat lesser known VR headset, but it focuses on a very specific goal. The VROrbit Theater focuses - as its name suggests, on watching 360 degree videos and images. The Headset can be connected to a Computer via a micro-USB cable and you can drag the files that you want to play on the Headset to a folder in the Headset. When you then turn on the VR glasses, you will see the folder and you can with use the simple controls on the Headset (and even the supplied wireless mouse) to click on all the content.

The VROrbit is not suitable for playing games, but has been developed for viewing 360 degree content. For example, the VROrbit can be easily combined with with, a 360-degree camera with which you can take a photo or video yourself, and you can easily play it on the Headset. The VROrbit can also be used well for business applications where several people have to watch a video at the same time. with VRSync software is easy to set up when someone (or multiple people) plays a video, so this is good to use for larger events.

  • Futuristic and lightweight design for comfortable viewing of 360 / 3D videos.
  • The interface is very easy to operate from the Headset or with supplied mouse.
  • Very high image resolution, so that VR movies are really shown as a movie.
