Oculus Quest Review

VR finally reaches the general public!

The new VR Glasses from Oculus, the Oculus Quest, is the first completely wireless VR Glasses from the American company. Oculus - also known for parent company Facebook - dominated the VR market in 2016 with the very first VR Glasses for Consumers: the Oculus Rift. with these glasses Oculus developed the first VR Glasses which was on sale at a relatively affordable price for Consumers, thereby creating the landscape for the next VR Glasses. The disadvantage of the Oculus Rift was that as a user you still needed a powerful (VR) Computer. Finally, the VR Glasses works with the graphics power of the Computer, so a strong PC was necessary. with the arrival of the Oculus Quest VR-PC gaming is almost a thing of the past. Almost, because a wired VR Glasses brings a lot of other advantages with with it. In this Review] we will take a closer look at the specifications, the content and our own user experiences with the Oculus Quest VR Glasses.

Oculus Quest specifications

The Oculus Quest is a completely wireless Standalone VR Glasses. This means that you do not need to connect the glasses to a PC, but simply put the glasses on and immediately enjoy VR content. A Qualcomm® Snapdragon ™ 835 processor is built into the glasses. This processor is powerful enough to run most VR games and apps properly. This makes it possible to play with the Oculus Quest VR games. In comparison, the Oculus Go VR Glasses has a built-in Snapdragon 821 processor. This VR Glasses is mainly recommended for watching VR videos and photos, but less for gaming. This makes the Oculus Quest a good upgrade from the previously released Go, because the more powerful processor ensures that games and (high-resolution) videos are displayed smoothly and sharply.

with With a resolution of 2880 x 1600 pixels and a 72 Hz OLED screen, the image is also beautiful and sufficiently bright, and colors of VR apps come out well. For lighter games such as Beat Saber, the Oculus Quest provides an excellent image resolution, but it is noticeable when you play a graphically heavier game that the quality drops a bit. Fortunately, the Quest itself ensures that the game is not displayed at its full resolution, so that games still play smoothly. But when you play a heavy game at maximum resolution, you will notice that the image will falter a bit. This is the case, for example, with the game Space Junkies.

Oculus

The comfort

The Quest weighs noticeably more than the Oculus Quest. with weighing 571 grams it is not very light Headset, but it certainly does not feel heavy either. You attach the VR Glasses with a Velcro system to the face. When you first put the glasses on your face, you may notice that it sinks a bit and is uncomfortable. Our Tip is therefore to first put the glasses against the forehead and then fasten the Velcro straps. This prevents the glasses from sinking down and leaning on your nose.

The material of the Quest is fine. The Velcro has a sturdy feel and is easy to adjust. The front of the Quest consists of a matte type of plastic, while the top and sides have a fabric material. The glasses have a more luxurious appearance, which looks good in our eyes.

The Quest touch Controllers

The Oculus Quest is, together with the Rift S, equipped with the new Oculus Touch Controllers. These Controller allow you to accurately capture multiple movements of your hand and fingers. When you rest the Controller on your hand, you will see that you have an 'open' hand in the game. If you then grab the Controller and squeeze it, you have made a fist or grabbed something. This takes some practice in the beginning, but you will soon get the hang of this principle and it will result in a few nice (new) game elements. For example, when you take a VR gun out of your pocket during a shooter game, you notice that you actually reach with an 'open' hand to your pocket and then squeeze the Controller when the gun to grab.

The Oculus Touch Controllers work well in our experience. How they stack up against the newer Valve Knuckle Controllers remains to be seen, but for now it is at least a good upgrade over the earlier Oculus Controllers.

Quest inside-out tracking

The Quest works on the basis of inside-out tracking. The glasses contain a number of cameras that can see the surroundings. As a result, you only have to put on the glasses and the tracking is performed automatically. During the installation and preparation of the Oculus Quest you will be given the opportunity to define your playing environment. You do this by looking at your surroundings (via the camera) and pointing with to your Controller the playing environment. This works very easily and is a very good way to determine the latitude. When playing a VR game, you will then see a transparent grid when you get too close to the bounded area.

Because you don't have to set up external sensors like with the Oculus Rift, the ease of use of the Oculus Quest is incredibly friendly. Anyone can use the VR Glasses, even if you don't have any technical knowledge with regarding the tracking. However, inside-out tracking also has some drawbacks. For example, the tracking is somewhat less reliable than with external sensors. This 'problem' sometimes occurs when you play a VR game that requires you to with move your arms a lot, for example during a fanatical game of Beat Saber. When the Controllers are out of the field of view of the two cameras on the goggles, they momentarily lose connection. This can result in a short stutter in the tracking or a floating Controller.

Fortunately, in our experience this does not happen very often. Occasionally you lose the tracking when you swing the Controller above your head a little too fanatically, but the advantages of this way of weighing tracking (no sensors) in our view outweighs the disadvantages.

Oculus Home software and games

The better-known VR Glasses are similar in terms of platform with the major game consoles Xbox and PlayStation: each VR Glasses has its own advantages and disadvantages with with regard to the choice of the platform. While the HTC VIVE has a particularly extensive range of games and apps through SteamVR and VivePort, the Oculus platform is less extensive. It should be noted that Oculus has some really cool exclusive games on the Oculus platform, such as Space Junkies and Robo Recall. The Quest has a game library that is separate from the Oculus Rift and Go store. The reason for this is that the Quest focuses with on gaming and not, like the Oculus Go, on watching 360-degree movies. Oculus is working hard to encourage game developers to make games specifically for the Oculus Quest, yet it seems that a number of AAA titles are limited to the more powerful headsets such as the Oculus Rift S and HTC VIVE Pro.

Conclusion

The Quest is Oculus' attempt to VR make gaming mainstream. Due to the relatively low entry price (after all, you don't need a Computer), it is already possible to gain high-end VR experiences. The limited VR selection in the Oculus Store is unfortunate, but not a deal-breaker for us. There are enough cool games with enough depth to entertain you for hours in the VR world. The complete wireless freedom in combination with with and the high image resolution provide a very good gaming experience. In short: Oculus has developed with the Quest a very good product aimed at gamers who want to dive into Virtual Reality.
